Statistics Canada is reporting that Canada’s retail growth is settling into a slightly elevated new normal, with the 2.23% monthly YoY growth since summer 2023 noticeably higher than the pre-pandemic 1.9% average growth rate.

Yet economic headwinds persist due to still-high inflation and elevated interest rates decreasing consumers' discretionary income and increasing costs. The prevailing sentiment among retail leaders could be characterized as "guarded positivity," with the expectation of another challenging quarter followed by a recovery in the latter part of the year.
