Skype Interviewing – The Basics

At JRoss we ideally like to meet candidates for an in-person interview. It is not always possible considering we conduct searches nation-wide and often in small remote markets. When necessary, we opt for a virtual interview using Skype. The purpose is to qualify candidates based on skills and fit for a role with our client but also understand what they are looking for in their next role. As we have all experienced, sometimes no matter how prepared you are, technology won’t always work as you anticipated. It is always best to be prepared.

Here are some tips:

  • Test the technology ahead of time, make sure your camera and your video works.
  • Prepare your surroundings. A cluttered background can be distracting. Do it in a quiet, businesslike setting, ideally in a room with a door.
  • Raise your camera so that it is at eye level, always make sure you are looking outwards and not down.
  • Practice with a friend. Your first few video calls are bound to feel awkward as you figure out where to look, what to do with your hands, or how loudly to speak. But it’s easy to work out those kinks ahead of time.
  • Dress appropriately for the role you are interviewing for. Gauging the company culture—from afar—becomes a key skill when trying to nail a remote interview. Since you're not there physically, looking the part becomes even more important.
  • Have a glass of water nearby in case you need it.
  • Go Ahead and Cheat. One advantage to a video or phone interview is that you don’t have to remember everything you want to mention. You can have notes in front of you. Place your resume in front of you, news about the company, questions you want to ask and potential talking points.

Good luck on your interview!
